Accessibility awareness

If you want to bring awareness to your colleagues or your superiors, or if you yourself are looking into understanding digital accessibility, these articles will help you get started.

Let’s start with the beginning

Introduction to Web Accessibility from the Web Accessibility Initiative will provide an overview of context, types of disabilities accessibility practices addresses, what making a website accessible entails and some common examples of accessibility issues.

People with disabilities

The best way to learn about accessibility is to be familiar with how people with disabilities interact with technology. The article Stories of Web Users, again by the Web Accessibility Initiative, shares a series of stories that will give you a perspective on the different types of disabilities and what a good digital experience looks like for each person. These stories are a mere glimpse into the necessities of each user. Keep in mind that disabilities are as diverse as people are different. To ensure that your digital product is accessible for users with disabilities, ask them.

Assistive technologies

If you don’t have the budget to do user testing, Browsing with assistive technology videos by Henny Swan will introduce you to a few assistive technologies and allow you to gather some insights on how these tools are used by people with different types of disabilities.

A podcast or two

If reading is not your thing, consider subscribing and listening to podcasts that address different topics around accessibility. Here are my two recommendations: Digital Inclusion Resources at InclusionHub and The Accessible Stall with Kyle Khachadurian and Emily Ladau.
